Police allegedly flee insurgents in Borno

Police have reportedly fled marauding terrorists outside the terror-ridden Nganaram Bulabulin in Borno State. According to sources from the force, the police, who were heading to Hawul local government area to bury a colleague, retreated following an exchange of gunfire with suspected Boko Haram insurgents. Bulabulin Nganaram is about 55 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital. Some witnesses told journalists in Maiduguri that a team of policemen had engaged some insurgents in a gun duel at Nganaram Bulabulin forcing the police to make a U-turn heading back to Maiduguri at high speed. A senior police officer who requested anonymity told journalists there were no inuries but police had taken an alternative route to convey the corpse to Hawul for burial. According to the witness, the fleeing policemen also warned off the soldiers at the outskirts of Maiduguri of the presence of terrorists. The reports raise concern at the the uniformed forces' capacity to thwart attacks by the Boko Haram.
