Atlético is where the heart is for Gabi

Spanish Atlético de Madrid midfielder, Gabriel 'Gabi' Fernández, has extended his commitment to the reigning 'La Liga' champions until 2017, the club has announced.

The Atlético captain said that signing the new contract fulfils "another dream" and expressed his hope "to continue making history", following a year in which Argentine Diego Pablo Simeone's men were crowned league champions and Champions League runners-up.

"To compete with our greatest rivals" and "keep winning trophies" are on Gabi's list of challenges for the 2014/2015 season, in which Atlético de Madrid will seek to match last year's performance and successes. "Last season will be hard to top, but the team is capable of achieving anything that is thrown at it", the midfielder predicted.

Despite the well-publicised departure of Spanish-Brazilian striker Diego Costa, who left the 'Rojiblancos' bound for English team Chelsea, Gabi stressed: "No one is indispensable nowadays. The ambition we have and that the team has demonstrated is not going to change".

Following in the footsteps of Jorge Resurrección, aka 'Koke', and Juanfran Torres, Gabi has extended his commitment to Atlético, where he is hoping for players to be brought in who can "excite the fans" by helping the club to "battle against the best".

"The team's mindset has to be to fight for everything and we will see how far we can go", he concluded.
