Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan |
Emboldened by the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the recent Ekiti State governorship election, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has declared that the PDP will win all future elections in the country.
At a press conference in Asaba, Uduaghan expressed confidence that his party would sweep the polls in the forthcoming governorship election in Osun. He said: “Across the federation, PDP is still the number one party. Yes, we had challenges last year but things are turning around. We have a game changer in our national chairman. All of you are witnesses to what happened in Ekiti State election where PDP won. Osun election is coming up; Ekiti feat would be repeated there also. We are taking them one by one and by the time we get to the presidential election, it will be very clear that PDP will win,” he declared.
Ahead of the local government election slated for October 25, the governor disclosed that measures had been put in place to checkmate tension arising from the conduct of primaries for the council election. “Our primary is coming up on August 9 as far as the local government election is concerned and a lot of people have picked tickets. There are some local governments in which more than 18 aspirants have picked tickets to become chairman but only one person can emerge at a time. I am happy that our leaders at the various council areas are working hard to see how to reduce tension because I hear that some are already stepping down for others. But I must say that I have not anointed any candidate in any council area.”
“I am a human being and I have my interest. But as the governor, I need to be very careful in managing that interest. We do not want to annoy anybody that would warrant him/her leaving the party,” he added.
The governor noted that since the state electoral body released the timetable for the election, opposition parties had been folding their arms accusing PDP of the plot to rig the poll. “Since DSIEC announced the date, only PDP has been active. We hear of nominations in PDP but we don’t get to hear about other parties. Only PDP aspirants are moving around seeking for votes. And when they win, others would say they rigged. That is not fair,” he added.
